A Clinical Study of Incompetent Internal Os of the Cervix

Abstract
It is now a well-established concept that incompetent internal os of the cervix(IIOC) is one of the etiologic factors in the persistent midtrimester loss of pregnancies. Unless effectively treated. This sequence of events tends to repeat in each
pregnancy, We had surveyed 25 cases with IIOC at Dong-A University Hospital from April 1990 to December 1994. These 25 patients had 5.7 average gravidities. The significant contributing factor was previous history of the traumatic induced
abortion
in 17
patients(68.0%). Among these 25, 14 were performed cervical cerclage and in one case, the transabdominal cervicoisthmic cerclage was done. Fifteen patients were followed up to deliveries with 12 living babies, 1 abortion, 1 premature rupture of
membrane
and 1 fetal death in uterus. Therefore, total post operative successful fetal salvage rate was 80.0%. Ten cases were managed conservatively and resulted in one living baby, 4 abortions, 3 premature rupture of membrane and 1 fatal death in uterus.
We
reviewed these cases with a brief review of literatures.
